About the Book

San Diego County Native Plants, 3d edition, is a 432-page guide to the native and naturalized plants of San Diego County, California.

The book includes information on more than 1,000 species, and many more taxa, that grow in all parts of the county, from the Pacific coast, to the highest mountains over 6000' elevation, to the lowest points in the Anza-Borrego Desert.
The book is designed to be useful to hikers, naturalists, landowners, planners, professional biologists, students, farmers and gardeners, and citizens interested in the natural diversity of San Diego County.
The book includes a 52-page introductory section discussing vegetation, conservation, taxonomy and many other topics; a 16-page index; and approximately 3000 color photographs from San Diego County.
This new book follows the format of the 2d edition, published in January 2006 and out of print, but has been substantially expanded, corrected, revised, and updated.
Changes to the new book include the highlighting of 150 listed rare and sensitive plants, most of which were absent from the 2d edition, and incorporation of the latest taxonomy from the 2011 edition of The Jepson Manual, which modifies the scientific names of hundreds of plants that are native in San Diego County.
